Scholarship Description
Alpha Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was chartered in 1929, the first Graduate chapter in Northern California and the second graduate chapter chartered in the Far Western Region. Our sorority’s eighth International President Ida L. Jackson was a member of Alpha Nu Omega Chapter. Each year Alpha Nu Omega Chapter awards scholarships to high school and college students for the upcoming academic year. Although Alpha Nu Omega Chapter awards multiple scholarships, scholarship awards are limited to one per student. The following types of scholarships are available:
Ida Louise Jackson Scholarship
Ida Louise Jackson, a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, became Oakland’s first African American school teacher in 1923. She was a charter member and first President of Rho Chapter on the Berkeley campus in 1921. After graduation, she was the moving spirit in the establishment of Alpha Nu Omega Chapter and was its first president. In 1982, to honor the service of Ida Louise Jackson in the chapter, as Far Western Regional Director and as National President, the chapter voted unanimously to give a Chapter scholarship in her name annually. Alvie Campbell Bible Scholarship
Alvie Campbell Bible was an educator in the Oakland Public Schools for 29 years where she served as a teacher, counselor, project director, and principal. She was dedicated to helping students attain a high level of academic achievement. In addition to working in the school district, she constantly worked with students through her church and numerous community organizations. Alvie Campbell Bible was a devoted member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and it was her desire to establish a scholarship that would aid students pursuing careers as educators. Denise Renee Williams Scholarship
At an early age, Denise Renee Williams enjoyed reading, going to the library, and reading to others. She began to tutor individuals that had reading deficiencies. This was indeed an opportunity afforded her as she started working with the Girl Scouts as a scouting counselor for many years. Denise attended Bishop O’Dowd High School where she was part of the debate team, forensic club, the Latin club, and student government. Denise completed postgraduate work at Mills College and Stanford University in Florence, Italy. In her career, she was a teacher, reading specialist, and counselor. Denise also served as principal to Robert O. Gipson Middle School students in Las Vegas, Nevada. This scholarship was established by her mother Rita Williams who was an active member of Alpha Nu Omega Chapter of the sorority. Apply here
Ruth Love Scholarship
Dr Ruth Love, former superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District, was an active member of Alpha Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. After a successful bid for superintendent in the city of Chicago, farewell donations were received from friends and colleagues in the Bay Area for a testimonial dinner in her honor. At Dr Love’s request, remaining funds from the dinner were designated for a scholarship to be given to a graduate of an Oakland Public School. Apply here
Alpha Nu Omega Chapter Scholarship
Alpha Nu Omega is also the home chapter of our 16th Far Western and 6th International Regional Director, Norma J. Tucker. Alpha Nu Omega is an active chapter working together to serve the Berkeley – Oakland Bay Area community.

Eligibility
For students to begin an application for AKA Scholarship for High School Seniors, they must fulfil the following eligibility criteria to be qualified to apply;
For Ida Louise Jackson Scholarship, The applicant must:
be an African American female seniorattending high school in Alameda or Contra Costa Countyhave a grade point average of 3.00 or above, on a 4.00 scaleplanning to attend UC Berkeley or a Historically Black College or Universitybe a citizen of the United States
For Alvie Campbell Bible Scholarship, the applicant must:
be an African American female college student, attending a Bay Area Junior College or Four years College/Universityhave a grade point average of 3.00 or above, on a 4.00 scalebe a citizen of the United Statesaspire to become an educator (teacher, counsellor, or administrator)
For Denise Renee Williams Scholarship applicant must:
Be an African American female attending a four-year college/universitySophomore year through Graduate level of course work; majoring in education.Have a grade point average of 2.50 or above, on a 4.00 scaleBe a citizen of the United StatesBe planning to become an educator
For Ruth Love Scholarship applicant must:
be an African American female or male high school seniorattending an Oakland high schoolhave a grade point average of 2.50 or above, on a 4.00 scaleplan to attend a Community college, Vocational school, or a Four-year college or universitybe a citizen of the United States
The Alpha Nu Omega Chapter Scholarship applicant must:
be an African American female or male high school senior in Alameda or Contra Costa County, oran Alameda or Contra Costa County high school graduate currently in her/his freshman or sophomore year of collegehave a grade point average of 2.80 or above, on a 4.00 scaleplan to or currently attends a California Four-year College/University or a Historically Black College/Universitybe a citizen of the United States
Application Procedure
All candidates registering for aka scholarship application must ensure that they complete the applications and send it by post along with all the supporting documents in one envelope.
Application Deadline
The deadline for the submission of application for Alpha Kappa Alpha Scholarship for High School Seniors is April 24, in every academic year. Scholarship recipients will be notified in May and an award ceremony will take place in June in the same year.
